Tell us what changed
Describe when the lesion appeared, whether it is growing or recurring, and any pain, bleeding or difficulty swallowing. The dentist reviews trauma, dentures, habits, medicines and medical history. A photograph can help record a change, but it cannot rule out a serious cause.
When to arrange prompt assessment
Seek assessment for a persistent ulcer, a red or white patch, a lump, unexplained bleeding or difficulty swallowing. Earlier review may be appropriate for worsening symptoms. Tobacco and alcohol history are relevant, but a suspicious lesion needs assessment even without these risk factors.
Examination and further tests
The clinician examines the lesion and surrounding tissues. Management may involve removing a source of irritation, reassessment, investigation or biopsy where indicated. A biopsy provides tissue for diagnosis; the need and method are explained before the procedure.
