Replace One Missing Tooth with a Dental Implant

A single implant can support a crown in a missing-tooth space without using the adjacent teeth as bridge supports. Treatment planning checks the bone, gums, neighbouring teeth and the way your teeth meet.

A gap needs individual assessment

A front-tooth gap, a missing molar and a tooth due for extraction have different requirements. The dentist checks the cause of loss, available space, gum line and bone. If the tooth is still present, we assess whether it can be saved. Existing crowns and the condition of adjacent teeth influence alternative choices.

Implant or bridge

An implant needs suitable bone and a surgical procedure. A conventional bridge uses neighbouring teeth for support and may require their preparation. A removable option may be appropriate in some situations. We compare these choices with their treatment time, cleaning, future maintenance and cost before you decide.

Placement and the replacement crown

Immediate placement after extraction is possible in selected cases, while others need healing before surgery. Immediate loading is a separate decision based on stability and bite. The crown’s shape and contacts are checked to protect the implant and neighbouring teeth. Front teeth also need careful gum and aesthetic planning.

Questions before you decide

Your questions answered

Sometimes. Bone, gum appearance, infection and the stability of the implant determine placement and loading. The restoration may need restricted contacts during healing.

No. An implant replaces the root support and has no dental pulp. Nearby natural teeth may need their own treatment if indicated.

Discuss the consequences for chewing, neighbouring teeth and the bite. Some gaps can be monitored; others benefit from replacement.

Depending on the space and neighbouring teeth, alternatives may include a bridge, a removable replacement or monitoring the gap. Your clinician explains the benefits and limitations of each suitable option.

Shape and shade are selected with the surrounding teeth and gum line in mind. The final appearance depends on the available space, tissues and restorative design.

Cost and visits

The written estimate identifies the implant, crown material, imaging, extraction and any additional work. Ask whether the quote includes the final crown and early reviews. The total number of visits depends on healing, the chosen restoration and whether extra treatment is needed.

Keeping the area healthy

Brush and clean between the implant crown and adjacent teeth as demonstrated. Attend reviews for gum health and bite. Report looseness, tenderness or a change in the bite promptly. Implant-supported teeth do not decay, but the surrounding tissues can become inflamed and neighbouring natural teeth still need care.

What an implant replaces and what it supports

A dental implant replaces the root support of a missing tooth. A crown, bridge or another prosthesis forms the visible replacement. Titanium and zirconia are different implant materials; a ceramic crown does not mean that the implant beneath it is ceramic.

Implant-supported treatment can be planned for a single missing tooth, a longer gap or an arch. Remaining teeth should be assessed individually before extraction is proposed. The number and distribution of implants follow the anatomy, bite and restorative requirements rather than a fixed package.

Alternatives may include a tooth-supported bridge or removable teeth. Discuss the condition of neighbouring teeth, surgery, cleaning, maintenance, cost and your priorities when comparing suitable choices.
