When the approach is considered
The surgeon may consider pterygoid support when the back of the upper jaw has limited bone and a fixed reconstruction needs additional posterior support. The decision relates to the complete arch and the design of the teeth. It is not determined by a scan measurement alone.
Assessment and imaging
Planning includes the available bone, sinus anatomy, nearby structures, mouth opening, medical history and intended bite. Appropriate three-dimensional imaging may be needed. The surgeon explains where the implant will be placed and how it connects with conventional, zygomatic or other implants in the plan.
Why posterior support matters
The bridge needs support suited to the length and distribution of the teeth. Additional posterior anchorage may help the restoration design in selected cases. The implant number and configuration are chosen together with the teeth; no single approach suits every upper jaw.
